Top 10 Alarming Symptoms of a Liver Disease

Importance of liver in our body

Liver is the largest gland in our body and obviously it’s importance cannot be ignored. Our liver is located just under the rib cage so it cannot be felt by our hands. An average liver weighs about 3 pounds and it’s main function is to filter the blood coming from the digestive tract before supplying it to the rest of the body other than that it also secretes the bile juice which goes back into the intestines for the digestion of the food. And not only that, it also produces proteins which are important for various clotting operations performed by the body.

A liver failure can occur because of various liver diseases this includes:

Hepatitis: Inflammation of the liver, which is usually caused by various viruses like hepatitis A, B, and C. Hepatitis can have other non-infectious causes too, including allergy and obesity.

Cirrhosis: Chronic damage to the liver from any cause can turn into permanent scarring, called cirrhosis. This leads to the inability of the liver to function well

Liver cancer: The most common type of liver cancer is hepatocellular carcinoma, always occurs after cirrhosis is present.

Ascites: After the occurrence of cirrhosis , the liver leaks fluid into the belly, which later becomes distended and heavy.

Gallstones: If a gallstone (i.e stones in the gallbladder ) becomes stuck in the bile duct draining to the liver, hepatitis and bile duct infection (cholangitis) can occur.

Hemochromatosis: Hemochromatosis leads to iron to deposit in the liver, thus damaging it and reducing its ability to perform well. The iron also deposits throughout the body, can cause other health problems.

In almost of all of these diseases you are very likely to experience these symptoms:

Liver Failure: 7 alarming symptoms to look for:-

  • Swollen abdomen

When a liver failure becomes chronic, it causes fluid to build up inside the abdomen which leads to swelling in the abdomen region as the proteins in the blood are retained in that area, in some cases this may make a woman appear pregnant. Sometimes this swelling can also take place under the ankles and toes as the fluid can go down because of the force of gravity.

  •  Colour changes in urine

Due to liver inflammation, the conversion of bile juice into bilirubin gets disrupted because of which the bilirubin gets excreted through our body in the form of urine, however this symptom only counts if the dark urine is arising on a consistent basis.

  • Irritation on skin

Prolonged liver disease can also cause various skin problems and pale skin as well which induces the mucus membranes these patches can occur on your fingers, palms and toes as well. In some cases patients can actually see the impressions of the veins on the surface of the skin.

  • Nausea

Unexplained and consistent vomiting is believed to be the top cause of liver damage as vomiting mainly occurs because of the presence of excessive toxins in our body which failed to get filtered from the blood because of the failure of liver. As a result our immune system has this natural impact which throw out those harmful toxins.

  • Loss of appetite

If the liver disease becomes advanced then it can cause various problems as a result of which you may lose your appetite, this is quite threatening in itself, as a result doctors will make you get all the nutrients in the form of supplements.

However if this goes on for a long time then it may even lead to the condition where you have to go for a liver transplant.

  • Fluid retention

Impaired liver can also lead to the retention of fluid inside your body which mainly occurs because of your body’s inability to circulate proteins inside it this can cause swelling in various parts of the body. This can also worsen if your kidneys fail to function properly.

  • Stool changes

Inability of your liver to secrete bile juice, can significantly impact your digestion process this can lead to constipation and is also capable of changing the colour of your stool because of inability of your body to perform the digestion properly.
